ACCESS: A School That Truly Fits

We didn’t realize how much we needed ACCESS Academy until we became part of ACCESS Academy.

Our older child had always felt a little out of place at his neighborhood school. Most of the students were focused on sports, while he was drawn to reading and drawing. Although he had a few good friends, he still struggled to connect with classmates who didn’t share his curiosity for learning, and many days ended with tears after being teased or left out of activities.

We first learned about Access when he was in 2nd grade, after school testing and receiving a letter about the program. A friend whose own child had thrived there told us, “this would be such a great fit for your son.” She was right. From the very first day, we saw a change: instead of coming home upset, he came home smiling, eager to tell us what he’d learned. At lunch, kids were talking about books and politics, not just sports, and for the first time, he felt like he belonged. It was clear that he was finally being challenged intellectually. He found like-minded peers who shared his curiosity and his sarcastic sense of humor.

What we didn’t expect was how much ACCESS would help our younger child. At his previous school he had been losing interest in academics and viewed school mostly as a social space. But once he joined ACCESS, everything shifted. Within the first week, he rediscovered a love for math and learning, and he began to see himself as capable and motivated.

The teachers at ACCESS have been incredible. Mrs. Salem, our younger child’s second grade teacher, is a true gem. But even more importantly, our children have found their people. They are surrounded by peers who encourage one another, who value curiosity, and who make space for different kinds of talents and interests.

The most profound change has been in our older child. He is more confident than ever, comfortable expressing himself, and open about sharing what’s happening at school. Not once this year have we picked him up in tears—now we’re greeted with pride and joy.

Sometimes when people ask where my kids go to school, I say “it’s a weird kid school.” And I mean that in the best possible way. These kids are weird, wonderful, unique, intelligent and inspiring. And I’m so grateful they can be their full, authentic selves, in a place that celebrates who they are. ACCESS is truly something special.
